HYROX New York venue entrance

What HYROX NYC Taught Me About Grit, Recovery, and Growth

When Race Day Punches You in the Mouth

Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth. On race day at HYROX NYC, that punch arrived early and it did not let up. The months of disciplined training, nutrition, and planning were all geared towards one clear outcome: perform to our potential and see what was possible on the course. Instead, we met a version of the event that forced us to rethink what success actually means for athletes at any level.

HYROX NYC was electric. The venue, the noise, and the energy of athletes from all over the world all created a sense that this was a big day. We had numbers in mind and a pacing strategy ready. Then, almost out of nowhere, severe and persistent leg cramping hit and refused to leave. In that moment, the original game plan disappeared and we had to decide what kind of athlete, and what kind of person, we wanted to be when things stopped going our way.

Inside HYROX NYC: Preparation, Pressure, and Curveballs

The lead-up to HYROX was not casual. Training combined strength work, conditioning, mobility, and the mental focus needed to handle a long, gruelling event. We built capacity with functional movements, longer conditioning sessions, and lots of practice under fatigue. The mindset going into race weekend was confident but grounded. We respected the event and we trusted the preparation.

Which is why the cramping was so surprising. We are still not completely sure why it happened or why it lasted almost the entire race. There are likely several contributing factors: travel fatigue, a late flight into New York, a short turnaround before the race, changes in hydration routines, and disrupted sleep. Each one on its own might be manageable. Combined, they can push the body into a place where it responds in unpredictable ways.

This is something we see often in sport. You can have excellent preparation, smart coaching, and solid health support, and the body can still throw a curveball under pressure. That uncertainty is part of what makes competition both challenging and meaningful. It is also a reminder that performance is not just about what you do in the gym; it is about everything wrapped around race day as well.

Racing Through Pain: Mindset When the Body Says No

Cramping sounds simple until you live it for an entire event. The legs seized, burned, and threatened to buckle. Every lunge, every run segment, every pull on a sled felt like a negotiation between what the mind wanted and what the muscles were willing to give. The frustrating part was knowing we were nowhere near our true physical capacity. The fitness was there. The body just refused to access it.

There was a point where we had to make a decision. The time goal was gone. Personal records were off the table. What remained was a choice: step off the course and protect the ego, or stay in it and redefine what success meant. We chose not to quit. Success shifted from chasing a clock to simply refusing to stop moving forward.

To keep going, we leaned heavily on mental strategies that any athlete can use when things go sideways:

  • Focus on one station at a time instead of the whole course

  • Use steady breathing to calm the nervous system and control panic

  • Keep self-talk simple and firm: phrases like “Just keep moving” or “One more rep”

  • Remember the deeper “why,” the commitment to the people who supported the preparation and the standard we hold for ourselves

That shift did not remove the pain, but it gave it purpose.

Recovery After HYROX: Lessons for Athletes and Weekend Warriors

Once the race finished, the attention turned quickly to recovery. The immediate plan was basic but important: rehydrate, get some electrolytes in, use gentle movement to stop the legs from locking up completely, and prioritise sleep. Over the short term, we added soft tissue care, light mobility work, and a gradual return to training instead of rushing back into intensity.

In our work as a sports recovery chiropractor in Vancouver, we see the same patterns play out with runners, HYROX athletes, and CrossFit athletes. Overreaching in training, stacking life stress on top of race week, and then adding travel can create the perfect storm on event day. The body is capable, but it is also sensitive to overload.

A smarter recovery and preparation plan might include:

  • Planning travel so you arrive with at least one full day to decompress

  • Keeping hydration and nutrition as consistent as possible with your usual routine

  • Building mobility sessions into your week, not just stretching in the warm-up area

  • Using simple tools to settle the nervous system, like breathwork or short walks outdoors

  • Knowing when to back off in taper week instead of trying to cram in one more hard workout

Recovery is not a luxury. It is a performance tool and a long-term health investment.

How Chiropractic Care Supports Performance and Resilience

Experiencing HYROX NYC from inside the pain cave reinforced what we focus on in the clinic. Gentle, individualised chiropractic care is not about quick fixes. It is about helping joints move the way they are meant to, supporting the nervous system, and cleaning up movement patterns that get stressed in training and competition.

For athletes and active people, this can mean addressing restrictions in the spine, hips, or shoulders that show up as recurring tightness or fatigue under load. It can also mean supporting recovery so the body is better able to handle hard training blocks and race days. This race reminded us that performance is not just strength and conditioning. It is alignment, recovery capacity, and mindset working together.

At West 1st Chiropractic in Kitsilano, we work with people who have goals ranging from HYROX and CrossFit competitions to staying active with family, managing back pain, neck pain, or headaches so they can live the way they want. Our role is to respect those goals and support the body so it can keep showing up, even when life and sport deliver surprises.

Gratitude, Community, and the Power of Support

None of this happens alone. We are deeply grateful for the people who make both race days and daily practice possible. A heartfelt thank you goes to Shalene, whose belief, support, and encouragement are constant. To coach and trainer Dai Manuel and the CrossFit BC community, thank you for the strength, conditioning, and community that helped build our capacity for events like HYROX.

We are also thankful for health professionals like Spencer Coppin and others who have helped optimise health behind the scenes. And to our family, friends, patients, and the wider community, your encouragement matters more than you might realise. When the race result does not match the training effort, it is that network that keeps us grounded and accountable.

This is the same energy we aim to bring into West 1st Chiropractic. Care is not only about adjustments. It is about being part of a community that supports long-term health and celebrates effort, not just outcomes.

Never Give Up: Turning Tough Races Into Future Strength

HYROX NYC did not give us the time we had trained for. It did give us something arguably more valuable: proof that we could get punched in the mouth, stay standing, and keep moving forward. Success is not always measured by the clock or the podium. Often, it is measured by the choice to continue when the plan has fallen apart and the body is protesting every step.

For anyone facing setbacks in sport or life, the message is simple. Keep moving. Use discomfort as information, not as a verdict on your worth. Learn from the stress, adjust the plan, and bring those lessons into the next challenge. From our perspective as a sports recovery chiropractor in Vancouver, growth often shows up first in how you respond to adversity, then in your results later on.
